The book is small in its size, but dense and serious, as it must be as a work by and around Paulo Freire and organized by the creator of the “Universidad Trashumante,” whose goal is to take the right word, a commitment to social change, and liberating aid, to the oppressed men and women of Argentina.

This collection of texts, which most vividly presents several of Freire’s dialogues from his travels throughout Latin America (in this case, mostly through Southern Cone countries), displays one of the essential characteristics of his discourse. It is at the same time heavily historically contextualized and laden with meanings that transcend the moment in which it is spoken. In the selections comprising this volume and dating back to the late ’80s and ’90s, Freire clearly positions himself with respect to the perversities of neoliberal thought and what led to the downfall of the socialist experiments of Eastern Europe. At the same time, he reaffirms his convictions, which are not in the least naive, regarding the political nature of education, its ethical and aesthetic significance, and the meaning of hope as the engine of progressive educators’ practice.
